Does the Civil war affect quests in Skyrim? ›

If you don't do the civil war quest.. the main quest gets a couple extra quests. The civil war can still be completed after the main quest. Short answer.. there are no adverse effects whatever you choose.. just slightly different paths leading to the end.

Conclusion: The Empire is the better choice. It will benifit everyone better, and every reason you have to dislike them would be gone after the defeat of the Thalmor/Aldmeri Dimionion. Skyrim, the Empire, and even the independant bottom half of Hammerfell.

Finishing the civil war before the main questline will cause you to skip over a pretty interesting quest in the main questline. I'd do main quest first, at least until you finish a quest in the questline called "Season Unending."

Pick Imperial if you want to play a character who is originally from a place aside from Skyrim, as it doesn't make sense to fight under a banner that ultimately won't accept you. Pick Stormcloak if you believe the Empire has no right to say what Skyrim denizens can and can't do, especially if you are a Nord.

If I remember right, if you are already thane of a hold and that hold comes under new management after the civil war, then you will be grandfathered in as a thane to the new jarl. You just have to ask them to become Thane again and they'll make you one.

If you have yet to bring the Skyrim Civil War to a conclusion, you can bring the conflict to a temporary halt by calling peace talks. Using the Graybeards' authority, you bring leaders from each side to the negotiating table. There is no diplomacy skill tree, and there will be consequences for these decisions.

A Stormcloak victory in the civil war leads to Ulfric becoming High King of Skyrim and declaring the country's independence. This leaves the Tamrielic Empire with only the Cyrodiil and High Rock territories, alongside several smaller provinces.

Luckily, players who wish to ignore Skyrim's Civil War without choosing the Stormcloaks or Imperials can do so without affecting the main story.

Should I wait to do the civil war in Skyrim? ›

i would do the civil war after the main quest, since during the main quest there are a few events that give you deeper insight on the civil war and its counterparts so you can decide better, plus alduin is obviously the greater threat to both sides.

You can join one or the other. If you still haven't taken the oath, you still have time to choose. Once you do, you'll be notified of failing to join the opposing faction. retrieve the jagged crown, instead of returning it to Ulfric, you may betray the stormcloaks and hand over the crown to the empire instead.

Certain NPC's can die in the fighting, making several smaller quests unable to complete. A certain main quest is directly linked to NOT finishing the Civil War. If you are at a certain point in the Civil War, you cannot continue in the main quest, there are dialogue options missing.

The only main difference it has is how the story progresses, while the end result is the same... In other words whether you pick a side, or don't, it doesn't influence the ending of the primary quest, just the path you take to reach the ending changes...
